Literacy Center & Classroom Lit. Library Needed Oh-So Badly!

My students need 2 sorters and 7 books, including "Youth in Prison" and "Cesar Chavez: A Hero for Everyone".

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. O'Herlihy's classroom raised $196

This project is fully funded

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and yet all have experienced a distinct lack of opportunities provided to them. We are, in essence, the last chance and a real opportunity for them to turn around and rise to the challenges our school provides in order to start a new path.

Since security is paramount in our location, we have a number of restrictions which demand real creativity to overcome. Now I want to design a reading center so that my students are allowed access to books they would not get to read otherwise, since the books are not allowed outside of our classrooms. The library we are developing is critical to my literacy work with these kids. I have had the benefit of witnessing children rise to the challenge of reading a book from beginning to end and they have done so because they were actually interested in it. Go figure.

The students can, with this project, have a place in the classroom that is "their own". They can work independently on their assignments and place them into their own shelf. Finally, I think I can get some book reports out of them! This filing furniture will sit atop a table and bookshelves where the students can access an in class library center growing now with your help and these books. The combination of these books, to be added to our classroom library and these shelving units will be the core of our Literacy Center.

Thank you for considering this project. This set of two 8 shelf units will go a very long way in providing structure and process to our classroom. We have sixteen students in our room at any given time and this will give them an opportunity to develop some autonomy and self direction in their classroom experiences, with regard to their assignments and paperwork. I can't wait to introduce this new element to our library and literacy center. I am really excited about this proposal.
