This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a Title I school in Georgia that serves a high percentage of low-income students. Students are provided free breakfast and lunch. Our population consists of a diverse group of students.
My students are acquiring English as their second language.
The gifts and educational needs of my students are diverse. My students require additional English language support in reading, speaking, listening, and writing. While they are motivated to learn, they struggle academically. Many are not reading on grade level, and find it difficult to find interesting reading material on their reading level. Despite my students socioeconomic status and academic standing, they have a zeal for learning.
My Project
Balanced Literacy Through Cooperative Learning & Active Engagement covers comprehension, word study, fluency, writing, and vocabulary skills. Students will participate in activities that encourage learning words phonetically, decoding, spelling, and word meanings. The skills highlighted in these resources are essential for students to master literacy. I love the fact that in addition to promoting literacy standards, they promote cooperative learning. Cooperative learning promotes peer interaction and helps develop language confidence for my second language learners.
These resources would serve as an excellent tool for incorporating the national literacy standards.
The activitie in in these resources are highly engaging. I firmly believe that when students are actively engaged in the learning process, it motivates them to learn and retain what they learned.
