Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am teaching kindergarten at a Title 1 school. Many of my students are low income and have few or no books at home. I have 20 students.

I am a first year teacher. I have the basics for my classroom, but I need other resources and supplies to help enrich my students learning experience. I believe that parents are a child's first teacher and it is important for children to continue learning at home as well as at school. Bridging the gap between school and home is often difficult in Title 1 schools. I feel the literacy bags are fun, non-threatening way to build that bridge

Children love to be read to. I would like to have 15 literacy bags. Students will check out a new bag every two weeks. The bag themes will include language arts, math, science, and/or social studies. Each bag will include: * Letter to parents/guardians * 1-3 books related to a theme * Variety of reproducible activities * Journal * Other resources: toy, puzzle, stuffed animal, or puppet The students will have the bags for a week. Family members can read the book(s) to the student repeatedly. The student and parent(s) will choose at least one activity to complete. At the end of the week bags will be returned with an activity and a journal entry completed. The journal entry will help students express themselves, give them practice in writing and other students will be able to read what their classmates wrote. Students will receive a sticker for every bag they check out. When they complete the entire series, they will receive a Certificate or Achievement.

It is my desire to instill in every child a love for reading. Literacy bags are a fun way for me to encourage reading and help families connect.
