Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are heritage language learners, they are either immigrants or first generation Americans. They learned Spanish at home at a young age and for the majority of them this is the first time they are taking Spanish as an academic class. They know how to speak and listen in Spanish but will be learning to read and write academically.
My students are eager to build on their home language so they may better communicate with their family.
They will be able to communicate with monolingual family members and travel to Spanish speaking countries. They will be able to be marketable in the future when they become biliterate in Spanish and English.
My Project
Since we will be starting the school year online it will be difficult for my students to access our classroom library for free voluntary reading and build on their literarcy skills in Spanish. Therefore, I want to be able to purchase digital literacy lessons on Teachers Pay Teachers so that all students continue to build these necessary skills. These skills will be essential in their path to biliteracy and are also transferable to other academic subjects.
I will be able to address the different learning styles in my class with these lessons and ensure to reach all my students.
The majority of my students are visual and auditory learners and I will be able to accomodate their need with a variety of current topics or topics of interest to them besides the traditional literary texts in their textbooks. This will expose them to other texts that will spark an interest and a life long interest in reading.
It is difficult for my students' parents to furnish additional reading material when providing for the basic needs of their family is their priority. I want to be able to give these opportunities to my students who are dedicated to learning and building on their home language. These skills will enable them to be successful in other areas since they are transferable and that will lead to them being a better student.
