Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal for this year will be to strengthen the reading level of all of my students. I want those who come in behind to catch up, and those who are already strong readers, to continue their growth.
While the students who will be using these materials are not yet in my classroom (as of this writing) I already know most of them very well.
I taught many of them for ELD and for the Technology elective this year. While some of my students are relative newcomers, what strikes me is their willingness to improve. I have a group of students who have the curiosity to learn more, and the courage to ask questions about the content.
My Project
I will have students this year with a wide range of skills coming into my class. While some read several years ahead of their grade level, there are several who are years behind. I want to make sure that my content reaches all of my students. With that in mind, I selected two texts that will be of interest to all of my students, but is approachable to my struggling readers. The two selected books "Lupita Manana" and "Children of the River" are a continuation of the theme of immigration that the students saw in the sixth grade (where they read "Esperanza Rising") which proved to be very successful. Now taking two texts to compare, I hope to see my students continue to make great gains.
These books will give all of my students something to catch their interest.
For some, it will be the immigrant narrative, to the feeling of being alien, to the fact that the language is approachable. Yet, I will be using the comparison of the two texts, and their historical contexts, in order to build engaging units for all skill levels.
