Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year teacher in Chicago Public Schools. I will be teaching first grade at Jordan Community School in Rogers Park, Chicago. The students at Jordan are 95% low income and split between African American and Hispanic. I am very excited about this upcoming school year and am grateful for any help in collecting the necessary materials to effectively teach my students. My proposal is asking for materials for both literacy and math. For literacy I plan to have centers that are engaging and meaningful for my students. Lakeshore Learning has created many activities for this purpose. Specifically, I think my students would benefit most from a the word family game and the working with words library of center activities. These activities include practice in contractions, compound words, plural words, multi-syllable words, word endings, and building small words from a larger word. Becoming proficient with these concepts will no doubt raise students' reading fluency level as well as increase students' ability to comprehend a text. When students do not have to focus on decoding words they are able to focus on the meaning of a text, which is what these center activities will allow students to do. While some students are engaged in center activities, I will be able to meet with other students for small group instruction. The ability to meet with five or six students is imperative for teachers, as not all students learn at the same pace. With engaging and meaningful activities such as the ones in my proposal, I will be able to make more time for small group instruction. The math materials in my proposal are two types of counters. Counters are so important in math because they can be used in almost any lesson. Whether used to help a student see an addition problem or to play a math game, counters are useful on a daily basis! Thank you in advance for your generosity and desire to positively impact the education of my first graders!
