Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a special education preschool class in a low income area. My students' ages range from 3 years old to 5. Their disabilities include speech and language, intellectual, Autism, etc. Many of them not only have a disability, they are also English language learners.
They all love to learn although they need materials that are hands-on and interactive.
My philosophy is that my job is to increase students' language skills, social skills, and classroom readiness. It is important to me that my students are fully prepared to go on in their education.
My Project
As a teacher, I believe in reading to my students everyday. In fact, I read to them a few times during the day. I love exposing them to fun and exciting books in different forms. Studies have shown that reading to children increases language acquisition and increases their literacy skills as they grow older.
These materials will be used to make reading exciting and encouraging all of my students to communicate.
The felt board stories are a great way of making books come to life for my students. They love all the bright colors and the ability to participate in the story by holding the pieces and putting them on the board when it is time. This is an amazing way of holding students' attention during activities as well as working on their receptive language skills.
The puppets will be used during circle times as well. It is another way of making stories and songs come to life and excite my students. I will allow them to use the puppets on their own as well. I am hoping that in doing this, students will try and imitate what I do and say with the puppets, therefore allowing them to practice using words in a safe and fun environment.
The language cards will be used during small group times. These cards are amazing at teaching students different nouns with clear pictures which makes it easier to understand.
All of these materials are great ways of encouraging language and exposing them to literature in fun and exciting ways. Hopefully, they will gain a love of reading that will last them a lifetime.
