Literacy and Knowledge for Students With Special Needs

My students need access to engaging materials that address current events and common core standards, such as Jr. Scholastic and Scholastic News magazines.

My Students

My students are amazing kids who have self-regulation deficits, which impedes their ability to access education. Most have experienced or are currently experiencing adverse childhood experiences which include but are not limited to abuse, neglect, poverty, trauma, and mental health issues.

My classroom is self-contained special education classroom that serves 12 students with a variety of social/emotional, learning and/or communication disabilities.

The students have had their education derailed but their deficits and adverse situations. It is a structured classroom that provides a small learning environment, which allows opportunities to address their academic and self-regulation deficits. We work daily on teaching students skills that allow them to regulate and cope so that they can access their academic education. Many students struggle with learning and communication. My classroom allows coaching and modeling with the goal of students taking some classes in the general education setting.

My Project

As a self-contained classroom, I teach a variety of subjects, including health, social studies, reading, writing, spelling, social skills, and science. My students require a variety of teaching modalities and strategies to address their varied learning needs. We use technology, novels, hands-on activities and other brain-based activities that are balanced to allow for regulation and access to a student's executive function skills. Skill practice is weaved into lessons throughout the day. Our goal is for students to increase their capacity for learning and access some of or all of their education in a mainstream setting. We are in need of engaging materials that have informative text, focusing on current events (Scholastic News magazine). In addition, we need a set of Junior Scholastic News magazine to provide the same current event/informational text, but at a slightly lower level reading ability.

Through our classroom structure and lesson planning, we embed skills that are necessary to become active learners.

Awareness of current events and what is gong on around them, will contribute to my student's skill set. Our goal is to teach students important skills and give them relevant experiences to assist them in becoming productive citizens in their community as they grow.
