Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from all backgrounds and strive to learn everything they can while in the classroom. Our school is a Title I school that has all students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The diversity in our classroom is so special, as each student brings something unique.

They are from all ability levels but share one thing: the drive to learn.

The passion my students have makes me so proud to be their teacher, as they encourage me to continue my own education so I can provide them with the best education they can receive. I want to share all I can with them to make sure they are proficient in their foundational skills. I do this while providing them with a safe and positive classroom atmosphere to encourage risk-taking to promote learning.

My Project

Literacy and phonics are vital in first grade. Many of my students this year came in struggling with basic concepts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many didn't know their letter sounds, names, or were severely lacking in their phonological awareness abilities. We have had to go back to preschool and kindergarten activities for some to try and fill the gap.

COVID-19 has deeply impacted my students, but their desire to learn has inspired me.

My students have worked hard this year to overcome a tumultuous time in our history. They are so resilient and determined to learn, but I lack resources that could help them more. These Lakeshore Learning activities would be the perfect thing for our classroom this year and beyond. Play is so important for learning in the lower grades, and these educational games would be impactful to reinforcing the skills we learn every day.
