My Students
Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. They generally do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school. They live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language.
My sixth graders are racially and culturally diverse and live in a complex world.
They need materials that are relevant and accessible. Our district is experiencing a severe economic shortfall and cannot afford to purchase new materials.
My Project
I am asking for ten copies of seven terrific, thought-provoking books including Wonder, El Deafo, Touching Spirit Bear, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, as well as two DVDs with movies. I plan to create literature circles and divide my sixth graders into small group of students. Each of the groups will be reading a different book based on their reading level. They will have class time to read alone, with a partner, or with audio support. Then they will respond to a Journal Prompt in writing and discuss their response with their group.
The books in this project were selected to enable my students to expand their world; learn compassion; and deepen their tolerance for other people.
This project will help my students learn how to participate in literature circles and how be civil when discussing difficult, emotion charged topics. They will engage in meaningful discussions as they analyze the literature and meet lesson goals.
My school does not have the funds to support this worthwhile project. Please consider donating and helping my students.
