I'm biased, but I know the best place to be in the entire school building is the library. As a rural high school librarian, I want my students to view the school library as a place that provides books for pleasure and informational reading, homework and research help, technology tips, as well as a place to explore new hobbies.
More than a year ago, I began offering my rural HS students a monthly subscription box (LitCrate) that includes a library book (chosen specifically for them based on the genre they prefer), a stress buster activity (examples include playing cards and coloring books), a gluten-free snack (examples include beef jerky and pretzels), and other surprises (examples include bookmarks and fidgets).
Semester finals are usually one of the most stressful times of the school year. I would like to help combat this stress by providing a copy of Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith in my December LitCrate box. Each page of Wreck This Journal provides a different prompt (examples include, “Write one word over and over” and “Poke holes in this page”). This fun unconventional journal will provide my students a creative outlet during our semester break as well.
