My Students
I have a wonderful, dynamic, and dramatic group of students. They are so eager and delighted to be in the library. I really want to watch them develop their love of reading, and I want to create a positive social environment that that will foster confidence and self esteem.
My middle school students are as diverse as you can imagine.
Some are fun and imaginative, others are quiet with a soft smile, and they all seem to really be working towards developing their own self identity and style, and they are beginning to explore and question the world around them in an analytical and reflective way. My school is creating a vision for the future that is really exciting. There is an increased emphasis on having interactive learning experiences that are framed within a relevant and holistic curriculum that meets each learner where they are. A lot of our students have never visualized themselves as academic, because that felt like something outside of their realm of experience. I see them realizing their potential and wanting to shape a productive and successful future for themselves.
My Project
My school has a large free and reduced lunch population, making it hard for families to spend money on items like books. I want to incorporate a lunchtime book club that serves to meet the social and emotional learning of our students by giving them a safe place to inquire and think critically, while also giving them a platform to pursue personal and aesthetic growth. I am also choosing titles that I think will help bring more boys into the library in an effort to make everyone feel part of our reading community.
The book club strives to promote reading for pleasure while helping students feel motivated, engaged, and bonded with the school and its curriculum.
These books will help jump start our book club which will enrich and develop reading literacy while creating the spark for a life long love of reading.
