Listening While We Read

My students need 5 portable CD players and books on CD to improve fluency in their own reading, hear what fluent readers sound like, and build sight word vocabulary in grade level texts.

I have the incredible privilege of teaching a fantastic group of third grade students at a small, very rural school in Montana. The school I teach at has a very diverse population of energetic students on a Native American reservation.

Every day at the end of our time together I spend time reading aloud to my students so they start to understand what fluent reading sounds like. This is normally the highlight of the day because the students can relax while being engaged in a text. They all love hearing a good story read to them and they don't even realize how much they are learning while they are listening. Without any cd players or books on cd my students are unable to participate in the listening center they would benefit from.

A listening center with portable cd players and books on cd would allow me to address the needs of my students. Additionally the students would be able to listen to a fluent reader, while following along with the text which would build sight word vocabulary and improving their reading abilities and comprehension overall. The listening center would also reinforce concepts across the curriculum and allow access to books that may be above a student's reading level. To accomplish these goals, I am requesting a set of portable cd players for students engaged in the listening center and a set of books on cd with the accompanying text.

Your generous donation will help my current third graders, and third graders for many years to come, improve their sight word vocabulary, comprehension, and love for reading great books. They will able to see the words and punctuation in the books, hear the words said in a fluent and expressive manner, and engage in quality literature on a daily basis.
