My Students

I have 27-30 students every year who are eager to learn, but because of the number of students some feel unnoticable and tend to misbehave just to feel important. Our low income, high poverty school is one of the oldest in the school system.

I teach 2nd grade in a Title 1 school in the Moore Public School system.

Our school is over 70% free and reduced lunch. Many live in one of the five apartment complexes that surround our school and even at home there is a lack of space for a high energy child. My students are amazing and I want to do everything I can to make their learning time engaging and fun. I continually offer brain breaks but due to lack of space a lot of movement within the classroom is not feasible.

My Project

Building fluency is an important aspect of learning in second grade. One major way to build fluency is by listening and following along with books on CDs. Currently, we have 5 sets and have been enjoying them since school began. Each day during our rotation, a small group gets the opportunity to listen to books on cd. This is a favorite station for all of my students. They have listened to the same 5 sets of books since the first week of school. I would like to be able to offer them a wider range of books to fall in love with.

We are in need of some different titles to enjoy, and since I have a very diverse academic group of students, I am requesting a nonfiction set of books with an audio CD.
