Listening to Literature!

Help me give my students opportunities to listen to more literature and engage in comprehension activities that will develop their reading abilities.

My Students

This year I have 20 first graders in my class. They are eager to learn and are happy little students. We spend about an hour each day doing centers. They work together and individually and love the choice they get during this time.

Their favorite center is reading with the teacher!

While I'm reading with a small group of students, others are working on the computer or completing center activities. They love to work hard and have done a great job managing themselves during centers so far this year. I'm excited to provide them with a center where they'll get to hear more stories and respond to them through meaningful comprehension activities.

My Project

Listening and responding to good literature is so important for children's developing comprehension! Because first graders are most often able to comprehend far more difficult text than they can decode, it is important to expose them to literature that is too difficult for them to yet read on their own.

A listening center is a great way to expose children to literature beyond reading levels they can decode on their own.

Another benefit is that they get to hear more stories and text than I can read to them during the school day because the listening center is an activity they can run themselves.

Students will go to the listening center, select the book they want to listen to (or the one provided), and enjoy having it read to them. Then they will complete a comprehension exercise, such as retelling the story in pictures, telling their favorite part, listing the characters, etc. I'm so excited to offer this opportunity to my students!
