Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are smart, energetic scholars that have the highest of aspirations. They are primarily Hispanic English language learners that, due to their parents' busy schedule and/or a lack of access to books in English, do not have many opportunities to read in their second language. They see the value of reading and have developed an insatiable desire to explore all kinds of texts. When students have opportunities to listen to texts in English, they enjoy participating in discussions about books, in Spanish and in English.
These scholars look to literature as a way to broaden their horizons, explore different lands, and to make connections to course content.
As such, they often come across texts that are above their reading levels or that are written in English. These readers deserve a way to access the rich texts that they are interested in exploring and to develop their English listening and speaking skills in an engaging way.
My Project
I am requesting a listening center that my scholars can use during independent work time and a technology center. Each first grader will have access to this center for at least 260 minutes per week to explore challenging texts, receive reading discussion prompts, and to practice their English reading and speaking fluency.
The listening center will allow them to access a wider range of texts, improve their literacy in Spanish and in English, and strengthen their love for reading.
Students will also be able to use the listening station as a way to explore audio books that complement the content being covered in other subject areas including Reading, Science, and Social Studies.
