We are a small rural middle school in southeastern North Carolina. We are a "low wealth" county with no cities or large towns and no large industry. Duplin County is primarily a farming area with farms and processing plants. We have a large migrant population. Most of our students are exposed to English only when they come to school. As a counselor, I have taken a great interest in our English as Second Language (ESL) students and their efforts to learn. In talking with them through an interpreter, I have learned that they are very uncomfortable speaking English. Therefore, they are hesitant to speak up in class. They have asked to have books on tape so they may hear and see the words. I am recording some books myself, but our ESL teacher has stated that he felt it helped him to learn English when he heard a lot of different accents. Recorded Books, LLC offers a series of "SteadyReaders" (books recorded at a slower pace) to aid in following the words and story line. I hope you can help us build our listening library not only for our English as Second Language students, but also for our special needs students. Thank you for your generosity.
