This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As literacy coach in a high poverty school, I work closely with teachers and students to encourage reading and writing across the curriculum. I am encouraging teachers to immerse out students in reading. Emergent readers benefit from listening to fluent readers read high interest picture books. My students are extra special and have a natural desire of wanting to learn to read and write. Since our students may not always have access to books at home, it is really important that we provide as many reading opportunities as possible while they are at school.
My Project
All of our kindergartners want to become readers. Listening to great books is a very important part of our literacy center time. As a coach, I create a lab classroom that will be available to approximately fifty kindergarten students. In the classroom, the students participate in read aloud, shared reading, and guided reading. I want to provide a center that focuses on listening to quality picture books. This listening center is a vital part of a balanced literacy classroom. One of the best ways for students to learn to read is by being read to daily. These emerging readers have an opportunity to really grow as readers. That is the ultimate goal.
