Listening to Good Models - The Daily Five in Grade 3
My students need 5 iPods and 25 headphones to listen to good models of reading!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bisson's classroom raised $652
This project is fully funded
My Students
We are a class of eager learners; more than 50% of the students are learning English as a Second Language and need to listen to great models for reading. We use the Daily Five in our Reading Workshop and one activity is to Listen to good reading. We do not have working audio equipment. Please help!
The students in this third grade classroom are a wonderful melange of many different languages and cultures.
Our school's poverty rate is more than 90%, which means many of these students don't have the language and literacy advantages that more affluent peers are exposed to. They are eager to learn and love being read to.
My Project
There are so many ways that this project can benefit my students! First, by listening to literature being read, the students will be exposed to good models of what reading should sound like. The students will also be motivated to read - and to read along with - the mp3 recordings that will reside on the iPods. The students will gain exposure to many different genres or types of literature as the teacher will ensure that the iPods are loaded with selections of outstanding children's books; this will enable students to experience many different kinds of books which will impact their self-selection of books in the classroom, school, and public library.
Through the use of the 5 iPods and 25 headphones, students who struggle with reading due to learning disabilities will be able to access the same literature their classroom peers are reading. By providing a "read along" struggling readers also access the curriculum. This project would be an equalizer for curriculum.
It is so important to expose students, particularly second language learners, to good models of English and reading.
Doing so impacts their language acquisition in a big way. We currently do not have access to working listening center equipment. Won't you please help us to become more literate readers?
