When a child can comprehend through reading but not listening, there has to be another approach to increase the fourth component of literacy. My school uses a literacy program, Success For All, which is specifically designed to improve the level of reading/listening/writing of each student. Currently, I am teaching 8th graders that have tested into a pre-high school reading level. Our charter school is located in a high-need community that is dedicated to the academic advancement of ALL students.
With that said, funds for supplies are in short demand. Parents often do not have the means with which to provide basic classroom needs as this program expands. And yet the students continue to persevere. I have discovered that my students want opportunities in the area of listening and responding. When my students were presented with the question: "How do you think you could improve in the listening component of literacy," the answer was unanimous: audio books.
As a class, we looked on bookstore websites for audio books that were available on CD and also offered a questioning guide. George Orwell's, 1984, was agreed upon. I am proposing funds for 15 paperback copies of, 1984, 1 copy of the audio book on CD and 1 copy of Orwell's, 1984 literature guide, and 1 CD boom box. WIth the aid of these items, students will have the opportunity to close their eyes and step into the imagination of the author during classroom listening. The paperback copy will serve as a student reference for homework assignments. There is a request for the literature guide that offers questions as a teacher resource to supplement the listening with additional questions and activities. And there is the need for the technology to bring this endeavor to life.
Your help will make it possible for my students to explore an important aspect of learning through listening. Success within this program will allow my students to enter high school next year with the same, or higher, level of competency as their peers. This proposal offers you the opportunity to make a gratifying impact in the future of a child, a school, a community, and a nation.
