My kindergarten students love to hear a good story! With this listening center, six of my students could enjoy listening to a wonderful story independently during literacy centers. Students enter kindergarten familiar with words and leave as beginning readers. We are building lifelong literacy!
My students come from disadvantaged homes where literacy is not a priority.
Their neighborhoods have high crime and drug rates along with low income. Many of their parents are not well-educated, so their income is low or they may work two jobs just to make ends meet. A large population of our students come from single parent homes. I am proud to say that our school is an important part of the lives of our students, from afterschool tutoring to buying socks, underwear and school supplies that our students need but don't have. The administrators, teachers and staff go the extra mile to help our students become successful.as they begin their educational journey. Our Title 1 funds are reduced more and more each school year, so teachers and the community often pitches in to provide for our children. Because so many students don't have support at home with learning to read, we need all possible resources to provide more opportunities to expose them to stories and literature.
My Project
Our students have one hour each day of independent literacy centers. During this time, skills taught during class instruction are reinforced through engaging activities such as teacher created games, computer programs, small group instruction, independent reading and student-centered cooperative work. Through the use of this listening center, students will be able to listen to age appropriate literature on CD and read along with the words in the book. It will expose them to a larger variety of words, enrichment for a better vocabulary and important literacy skills. These literacy centers are planned to enrich students on their individual levels. On occasion, struggling students will use the listening center to learn the the alphabet sounds or sight words that they are having difficulty with.
This project will be an important addition to our classroom because the students will be better exposed to the way a person's voice changes as they read a story.
A very few number of our students are familiar to storytelling and I feel that this center will help in teaching them more about the culture of other countries through the art of storytelling. In the event that we want to learn about another language, we will be able to listen to CDs of that language.
