My students come from disadvantaged homes where literacy is not a priority. Their neighborhoods have high crime and drug rates along with low income. Many of their parents are not well-educated, so their income is low or they may work two jobs just to make ends meet. A large population of our students come from single parent homes. I am proud to say that our school is an important part of the lives of our students, from afterschool tutoring to buying socks, underwear and school supplies that our students need but don't have. The administrators, teachers and staff go the extra mile to help our students become successful.as they begin their educational journey. Our Title 1 funds are reduced more and more each school year, so teachers and the community often pitches in to provide for our children. Because so many students don't have support at home with learning to read, we need all possible resources to provide more opportunities to expose them to stories and literature.
