This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school, built in 1930, is listed as a historical building and is located in the heart of downtown Tucson in Barrio Viejo. We are a Title I school in which 75% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

My students range from kindergarteners to 5th graders, all of whom come from a home where more than one language is spoken.

I’m privileged to work with these amazing children as they not only learn the academic content for their grade level but do so while also developing their English language skills.

My Project

Throughout the school day I work with different groups of children based on their grade level and English language needs. One type of activity that all my students enjoy across grade levels are those tied to music. Whether we are having a sing-along to remember how to spell our sight words, listening to music from faraway lands that we are learning about while writing in the Carrillo Garden, enjoying a podcast while practicing our listening skills, or simply celebrating a moment by dancing a cumbia, music plays an integral role in our classroom.

Having a portable, durable, and excellent quality Bluetooth speaker would allow increased flexibility in terms of our learning environment.

This flexibility has always been something I’ve strived for in my classroom but never more than right now, due to the pandemic. This speaker would allow students to hear the auditory part of the lesson with clarity and precision no matter where they are sitting or where we are doing our joyous learning!
