I teach in a Title I school in rural North Carolina where the local economy has been affected by local furniture and textile factories leaving our area. Also, in the last few years, I have seen an increase in our ESL population. The children at my school often come from homes where no books are owned and in many cases where parents do not read to their children every night.
I am requesting books on tape for 23 students in grades one and two to use during "Literacy Centers" and additional trade books to send home with students for nightly reading.
I use literacy centers in my classroom to offer a variety of activities to meet the various learning styles of my students. The students are allowed to choose literacy work stations where differentiated activities are placed to reinforce or extend each child's learning. I am especially interested in helping my ESL students and struggling readers. Also, I must meet the needs of my 9 second graders. My personal books on tape library consists of 10 to 15 fiction books for early emergent and emergent readers as I have taught only first grade for 16 years.
I will use the "take-home" books to involve parents in their child's education by encouraging nightly reading.
