My Students

Do you remember the comforting feeling of curling up with your parents while they read you a good book? Listening to a story being read aloud increases students' prosody by providing an example of the expression students should be using while reading, thus increasing fluency and comprehension.

We have kindergarten and first grade classes only.

Many come from economically disadvantaged families with one parent homes. Some students are from military families and often relocate throughout the school year. My students are happy five and six year old children from southeast Georgia.

My Project

Students alternating between reading silently (or with partners) and then listening to the book on audio, as they follow along, will allow the students to evaluate their own reading expression and make the necessary adjustments. These resources will increase students' overall fluency and comprehension, in turn helping students in all subject areas. These iPods will be especially useful for my struggling and/or disinterested readers. By alternating their own silent reading with listening to the book on the ipod, they are motivated to continue reading the book and have a higher chance of completing the whole book successfully.

Many of our students do not have the experience of a parent reading to them every night; therefore, having an audio resource modeling expression is critical to increasing their fluency and reading comprehension.
