Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you know to learn a sound or word, a child must hear that word hundreds of times? Evidenced based practice for treating articulation disorders includes listening to the words with correctly produced sounds, with amplification. I currently am using my phone for this activity.
My students are students with identified speech and language disorders.
The majority of my students are preschoolers. Our school is considered high to moderate poverty. My students already have many strikes against them succeeding in school, and my goal is to not have their speech and language skills be one of those strikes. They do have some advantages. Preschool services are not mandatory. The children who do come typically have strong parental support. The majority of my kids love to come to speech and love to learn.
My Project
I am requesting 4 Ipods, 4 headphones, and 1 speaker so that my students can listen to targeted word lists to help improve their articulation. Currently I have audio files on my phone, which I play on a loop. Each child takes a turn listening, while I work with other children. However, because I only have 1 device and limited time, I play all the audio files on a loop. This means, I can't guarantee that the child is listening to words that are targeting his or her process. Having 4 Ipods available would mean I could set up each one with an individual sound or process and the children could listen to their own word lists.
This project is important because once my children are in school, attending speech therapy will put them further behind.
The sooner the children I work with master their articulation, the sooner they can be exited from speech services and look and sound like everyone else. Help me be the best therapist I can be and my students be the best learners they can be.
