How do you become a fluent reader? By listening to fluent readers read and spending a lot of time practicing. My struggling readers need to spend more time listening to fluent reading so that they can begin to have confidence when they read.
We are a PreK - 8th grade school in an urban area of North Carolina.
Nearly all of our students are living in poverty. We have a large amount of homeless students and our population is very transient. About 50% of our students are reading below grade level and we are working hard to ensure that in two years, 90% of our students will be reading on grade level.
I am requesting a set of headphones for each of my students. These headphones would allow my students to listen to stories from RazKids being read aloud. We are very lucky to have a subscription to RazKids but we don't have enough headphones for all of our students. With headphones, my students wouldn't disturb one another with their audio. These headphones will not only help my students with their reading fluency, they will also help my students access the content knowledge because of the large amount of nonfiction books available on RazKids.
Students love listening to books.
We are lucky enough to have access to technology for small groups of students. If they all listened to books at the same time, without headphones, it would be very disruptive! These headphones will allow my students to enjoy listening to a book without bothering anyone else in the room. I believe these headphones will have a direct correlation with reading achievement this year!
