My Students

My Super Second Grader’s take great pleasure in listening to stories; audio books are extremely beneficial in enriching student’s multi-sensory experiences. Students who hear books being read can see how the words on the page can come alive in an expressive way.

My students are full of life and energy and are always excited to learn.

They come from a disadvantage school on the Windward side of Oahu. Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Micronesian ancestry. I have a very diverse class of 20 students with different cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. They are motivated young second graders who struggle with literacy due to the lack of tools.

My Project

Having a listening center in my classroom will help my students immeasurably. Many of my students struggle with reading and several are well-below grade level. Having a listening center can help my students build stronger literacy and comprehension skills. The listening center would allow each of my students to listen to their appropriate literacy level stories, which will help them read more fluently along with hearing the accurate pronunciation of words. The students will concurrently build upon their listening skills also.

A listening center helps students focus on the sounds of words being read without interruption and provides an excellent model of fluent reading.

Audio books also give students an important skill in listening — a skill that all students must master in literacy learning. The listening center will improve the confidence in my student’s ability to read which will boost their self-esteem and make them career and college ready students.
