My Students

Do you remember the first book you ever read on your own? Learning to read seems so natural and fun, unfortunately, many of our students find it to be a daunting task. Listening to books provides each student with the independence to listen to a story and practice reading skills at their own pace.

The kindergartners I work with face many challenges.

Household incomes of the children in our building are low and many of our children do not have much in the way of quality learning materials. Many come from single-parent families with multiple children. Learning to read seems impossible when these children cannot recognize their own name in print.

My Project

Providing these children with books, CD's and technology not only teaches reading skills, but also allows the children to learn necessary self-help skills. The children learn an appreciation for the items within the classroom and how to take care of them. They develop ownership of the books and often memorize the text, a very crucial first step in reading. They love to show me how they've learned to read their book!

Providing the children with a listening library is incredibly important in a well-rounded reading education.

The children have the ability to listen to the different voices of the readers on the CD, move at their own pace and make their own decisions as to which book they will listen to each day. Allowing the children that independence helps to foster their growth learn to love reading and books in a very natural way and listen for the fun of it!
