I am a second grade teacher in the Albany City School District. Some would say my students have a disadvantage because of their poverty situation, I just tell them it means they have to work hard. My classroom is filled with WONDERFUL ENERGETIC students who have a zest for learning when kept engaged. Many of my students read below grade level and they all have varying levels of strengths and weaknesses when it comes to reading. Teaching them reading strategies works best in small groups. In order to do this, the rest of the class works in small group activities that are both educational and engaging. All my students love to go to the listening center to enjoy books on tape. Many of the books I have are from an old kindergarten series that my students don't find too interesting. I have begun to purchase books that are more for their levels and interests and have found that they can't get enough. My students' listening ability and interest level extends far beyond their reading levels. Listening to stories helps them to increase their reading abilities and builds comprehension. It gives them tools for meaningful conversation with peers and increases exposure to literature. Mostly it is fun and kids like to have fun!! The listening center is used daily and books are changed weekly. I would like to be able to give students the chance to hear a new book in a group as often as possible as well as revisit old favorites individually. It is for this reason that I am requesting several books on tape, along with some cassette players. I thank you for just reading my proposal and for considering offering assistance. If funded, I assure you that these books will be used often as well as shared with other classrooms so that many students will be able to benefit.
