Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”— Dr. Seuss. As a first grade teacher, this quote sums up my purpose each and every day. I strive to create a love of reading in my students which will hopefully take them amazing places in life.
My students come from low socio-economic backgrounds.
The majority are on free or reduced lunch and are English language learners. Our school serves a large Hispanic community in California where many families are working multiple jobs simply to make ends meet. It is not uncommon for my young students to be primarily cared for by older siblings or cousins because their parents are working so hard out of the home. What they also have, however, is a contagious enthusiasm for learning! They come to school each day with a positive attitude and the determination to try their best, even when they are faced with a challenge. One of the biggest challenges for my students is lack of vocabulary due to lack of books and reading time in their homes. They do not have the same language skills as their peers in more affluent areas. My goal is to give them those skills regardless of their zip code!
My Project
As a first grade teacher, I feel it is my responsibility to show my students the importance of learning to read. As a result, I try to expose my students to various types of books and create a love for reading. In our classroom you will find me reading stories aloud to the whole class, reading stories in small groups, and students reading to themselves.Reading and enjoying books are expectations in our classroom and students learn this concept very early.
A portable CD player will provide another way for students to be exposed to books. A small group of students will be able to listen to stories on CD with the listening center. All of this exposure to literature will help achieve my goal: for my students to love reading and become great readers.
Donations to this project will help add to our classroom literacy community.
Students will have another way to listen to books and grow their love for reading.
"The more you read, the more you'll know. The more you know, the more places you'll go." Having access to more books and more language will help increase my students' reading proficiency and will open up opportunities for them. My little Firsties are going places!! Thank you for helping me make this happen!
