Young children love to listen to stories. They also love listening, singing, and dancing to music. I would like to give my students a listening center where they can choose to listen to either.
A listening center is a great tool for literacy development, and these CDs will help students develop an appreciation of diversity.
Listening to books being read aloud helps students hear and understand what good reading sounds like. This example of fluent reading along with repeated exposures helps them learn to read and tell stories with expression, which then leads to better comprehension. These repeated readings will also help students develop their vocabularies as they become more familiar with the more challenging words in the books.
This listening center comes with the CD player and headphones. It also has places to store the books and CDs, making it easier for young children to use the center independently. By building this independence, students feel more confident in their abilities. This confidence will also help their social/emotional development as they become more willing to try new things. To further aid in developing their social/emotional skills, I am also requesting a set of multicultural CDs. These CDs will help my students develop a respect and appreciation for different cultures. Having this center would be a great benefit to my students. Mahalo!
