Mrs. Morgan from Omaha NE is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a new listening center. A larger table would allow for more students and our current CD player is broken. Also, we need more headphones.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Two hours of our day is dedicated to learning centers. Our current listening area is limited to 1 student. Our current CD player is broken, which limits our literature selection. Also, we don't have enough working headphones to allow for more than one person at a time.
The students I work with are mostly of lower economic status and have fewer language abilities.
Listening to stories strengthens their language. Also, it helps their understanding of a story and allows them to recall details better for future comprehension. The national early literacy panel did all kinds of research to show how students are way more successful with more enriching literacy experiences early in life rather than later.
"Reading is typically acquired relatively predictably by children who have had experiences in early childhood that fostered motivation and provided exposure to literacy in use." National Research Council, 2000. A listening center would allow students to listen to more great literature or to be re-read a story. We are asking for a listening table with 4 student areas along with a CD/Tape player and wireless headphones to use while listening to books on tape or Cd's.
Many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children.
They don't have to listen to my voice or their parents voice reading to them all the time. It gives them something new and exciting. Please help enrich our learning environment!
