I am a second grade teacher at Manierre School, one of the schools that serves students who are residents of the Cabrini-Green housing development. My students must become fluent readers before they enter the third grade and face high-stakes testing. I am writing this proposal to request material for a listening center for my classroom. My students range widely in reading ability, making it impossible to meet all of my students\' needs through whole-group reading instruction. Instead, I work with groups of five or six students who are reading at about the same level, while the rest of the students are working independently at literacy centers, one of which is the listening center. Students who listen to books read on tape gain much-needed exposure to fluent reading. They also get exposure to texts which they are not yet ready to read independently. Students enjoy having ability to listen at their own pace, pausing and rewinding the tape as needed. All of my students would benefit from a listening center with a wide variety of books choices. A listening center stocked with quality books will allow me to be certain that all of my students are engaged in meaningful learning while I provide reading instruction to small groups of students.
