My Students

My students are very excited about learning this year. They are especially excited about learning to read.

I teach in a low income high, poverty school district within Oklahoma City.

Many of the students who come to my school have parents who are not able to read with them at home or English is their second Language. My kindergarteners are very excited about learning to read this year. I teach my students reading through whole group, small group, and individual instruction. During small group instruction, students have Literacy Stations (Daily 5) they rotate through to practice concepts we are working on in class. One thing that would be very beneficial during Literacy Stations (Daily 5) is a Listening Station.

My Project

My students need a listening center. This listening center with read along books will give students the opportunity hear stories read aloud, while following along. Students not only need to read, but also need to listen to reading to increase their own literacy skills. The opportunity to follow along while the story is read will also help with reading and decoding skills. Literacy Stations are used while I am working with a small group or with individual students. During this time students are working independently, so the activities need to be engaging, sustaining, and easy for the students to use especially in Kindergarten. The ability to have several students listening and reading the same book instead of taking turns increases the amount of student engagement in learning.

A listening station in my classroom would allow students to improve their literacy skills.

Students who do not get help at home would be able to listen to someone reading to them. My students who do not speak English would be able to improve their English by listening to familiar stories in class,
