Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Hello. I teach third grade on the South side of Chicago. 100% of my students receive free lunches. My students spend an hour each day engaged in reader's workshop. Students are reading independently, taking notes about their reading, writing responses to their reading, conferencing with me, or participating in a guided reading group. Many of these students are struggling readers needing additional time hearing and reading along with exciting books, and some are very good readers who need something new and different to keep that love for books alive. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have the resources at home to hear and/or practice authentic reading. I read to my students every day, but sometimes even that is not enough. Listening centers will allow my students to hear intonations, learn new vocabulary and sight words, be exposed to books they might not otherwise have a chance to read, improve their own reading ability, and most importantly ENJOY READING. I have provided a CD player from home, and purchased a tape player. Now, I need help getting books to play on them! By helping us get excellent books on CD/tape, you will be part of the magnificent change that occurs as young learners learn the power of books.
