Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are learning how to read informational text and respond critically in writing. They use annotations, respond to enduring questions, as they read informational text. With Common Core, they also need to be able to use that knowledge when listening to text that is being read to them.
My students are just at the beginning stages of Close Reading.
They are learning how to chunk their text, annotate with a specific purpose, determine with the author is saying, and dig deeper in the text. They are excited and anxious to learn these strategies. However, the opportunity for them to listen to a text is limited to just the teacher reading to them. Text presented in diverse media is difficult to come by at my school site. The 3rd grade students need to be able listen through headsets to a speaker. I would use the Listening Center to have the students listen and respond in writing to informational text being given by a reader. I have daily Learning Stations and Centers for my students and the addition of a Listening Center would benefit my students greatly! They would then be able to transfer their Close Reading Skills to this media.
My Project
One of the standards in the Common Core for 3rd grade is the following: SL.3.2 Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. If you would allow me to purchase a Listening Center, I can have my students gain the skills necessary to be able to listen to the text being read aloud and analyze, find the main idea, and supporting details of what the speaker is saying. When the students are Close Reading a text, they are able to dig deeper into what the author is saying by reading the text multiple times. However, when the students are just listening, it is much, much more difficult. The Listening Center will give the students daily practice with this challenging skill! I want my current and future students to master this standard and be ready for the future!
If you would be willing to donate to our Listening Center project, it will benefit students for years to come.
It will give them the skills to listen to complex informational text from a reader. The students can transfer the skills that they have already learned for main idea and supporting details and apply them to a text read aloud. Thank you VERY much for any consideration shown to my request.
