Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyday my students walk through my door with a mentality of a "Champion". In our classroom we strive everyday for excellence, however sometimes we are faced with the unfortunate reality that we don't have the necessary materials we need in order to succeed simply because of where we live.
My Champion Scholars come from a small community in Miami predominately populated by Haitians.
Last year our school earned a D overall but this year we are striving to make that grade go up. My Champion Scholars are in the third grade, a critical year in passing the state-wide FCAT exam. As a class, we have established goals that ALL of us will pass the FCAT with a 3 or higher. Although the grade required to pass is a 2 we all hope to leave third grade on grade level. We also hope to grow at least 2 reading levels which is more than the average student, but we know that we are capable and are determined to do it.
My Project
The resources being requested will help us reach our goals for the year. We know that when reading with fluency, we read with a good pace and accurately. One way to help us become fluent readers is by listening to other fluent readers. That is why I am requesting a listening center for my class. The Champion Scholars will be able to listen to reading during Differentiated Instruction time with a book on their level and will enjoy reading so much more by reading in a different way. I believe that my students CAN and WILL reach these goals despite of what society, prejudice, or others might think about them hope to affirm their strengths and give them the space to discover that they are capable of achieving their goals and meeting high expectations. My hope is to build a classroom culture where students strive for excellence everyday, that take pride in their work, and that always have a "CHAMPION" mentality.
In advance, I would like to thank you for your generosity and loving heart.
Thank you for supporting me as a teacher but more importantly, thank you for supporting OUR children that are unfortunately not always given the same privileges and opportunities that they deserve. It truly takes a village to raise a child and your support will undoubtedly help them succeed to be the bright and successful beings that they were born to be!
