Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember listening to your favorite story and wanting someone to read it over and over? It's 2013 and now children can listen to the teacher read their favorite book aloud and then they can listen to it on CD. Imagine that!
My students consist of 12 Kindergarten, first grade and second grade special education students.
They live and attend school in an area hit hard by Hurricane Sandy last October. A majority of them are speech and language impaired. They require various modalities to learn different topics. Listening to stories read aloud help students with their reading fluency and comprehension.
My Project
Listening to stories read aloud on CD will enable my speech impaired students to improve their fluency and comprehension skills. They will be able to listen at various times throughout the day during centers and recess. The ability for them to independently listen to stories they love, gives them access to books they wouldn't necessarily read on an independent level. This will foster their love for reading and improve their reading levels throughout the school year.
Listening to stories read aloud, enables low level readers to broaden their experiences in reading.
It also gives reluctant readers an outlet to listen to a good book which then encourages them to pick up more books.
