Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are of low socioeconomic status. Students in this community are migrant and many are English language learners. There are a variety of learning levels in my classroom. I have high achievers that always need to be challenged as well as students with special needs that need curriculum modification to address their levels. Many of our students do not have the support at home to get extra help in reading.

Our community is mostly a farming community with one parent working while the other stays home to address their child's basic needs.

I also have students that only have one parent in the home. This has been a struggle to support my students emotionally in this academic school year. Students in this area do not get many opportunities to explore new and exciting things. The classroom is where students get many new experiences and explore concepts that their families could not provide for them.

My Project

The sight word kits will help those students who are struggling readers.

A listening center in our classroom will help all students, especially those who are struggling readers.

The listening center will be accessible to all students on a daily basis during centers. The books with cassette tapes and CDs that are available in the class can be listened to as well. Students will independently plug each headphone into the device to listen to books without disturbing guided reading groups. This will help them with reading fluency and expand their vocabulary. Having a quiet learning environment is critical. This environment will be calming, especially for students who are sensitive to noise. We can have a more positive learning environment.
