Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Slonaker Academy is a public elementary school in the the Alum Rock Union School District in East San Jose, CA. We are a low-performing school (according to state standards) which serves predominantly low-income, minority, second language learners. One hundred percent (100%) of our students receive free lunch.
According to the STAR scores of 2003/2004, 93% of my fifth grade students are not performing at grade level in Reading/Language Arts. Although these students have been taught a state recommended, district adopted curriculum (Open Court Reading) for almost four years, they continue to lag behind their peers in more integrated and/or affluent school districts.
In recent years, our budgets have been significantly decreased. As a result, we have not been able to purchase extra or remedial materials to supplement our curriculum. In addition, what materials we do have will not be replaced when it becomes badly worn or broken.
This is where you can help. I am requesting a listening center for use as a remediation tool for my students. A listening center provides low-performing students supplemental access to written materials. Our curriculum comes with CDs that the students could use to help them develop both their reading and comprehension skills. In addition, when students listen to a story, they learn in many different ways. For example, they can stop the tape or cd, go back, check for understanding, then go on. They can listen to a story without the worry of de-coding every word. They learn and comprehend unfamiliar words in context. They use a multi-sensory approach to learning. etc. etc. As I'm sure you can see, the benefits to this type of learning are many.
Please help my students reach their full potential through your gift of a listening center for our classroom.
