FULLY FUNDED! Ms. David's classroom raised $564
This project is fully funded
I teach 2nd grade at a Title I school that is located in the "projects" in Opelousas, a small town in Southern Louisiana. I have a class of 12 students who were in large classes and falling through the cracks. They have been in my class for 2 months and their grades have gone from D's and F's to A's and B's due to the one-on-one and tactile experiences I am able to provide such a small group.
Despite their personal hardships, the parents of my students are cooperative, supportive and want better for their children than what their own life experiences have been. Most of my parents are single mothers and single fathers struggling to survive without formal education in an area where there are no jobs for them because of that. Community support has dwindled to our public schools due to Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. We have had a huge influx of New Orleans refugees who came here with nothing except the clothes on their backs. The community has done all it can but we still need help with our schools.
My class is in desperate need of a listening center and talking books. My students are below average readers but they do not know that. Though they are in 2nd grade they are reading on a 1st grade level. However, since they have been with me in a small class environment (12 students), their reading has improved dramatically. They feel empowered because they have become independent readers since they have come to me. I stimulated their interest in reading through introducing books that they love, they read along with me, and we read for enjoyment every day in addition to formal reading/phonics lessons. A listening center would enable the students to read along to a narrated tape and would enhance their literacy experience exponentially. They would be able to listen to proper pronunciation and visually see the words in the book simultaneously. This provides auditory, visual, and kinesthetic experience for the students which are the three main learning styles of students and would help to increase their level to that of 2nd grade students. This donation would not last a year but would last decades! These listening centers have been proven in study after study to increase student's reading comprehension as well as their vocabulary.
My students have dreams of college and understand that an education is their way out of poverty. I have a relationship with the parents so they know that I will mentor the children throughout their lives, not just in 2nd grade. I love my students and it is important to me that they succeed not only in 2nd grade, but in life.
I have spent over $2000 of my own money to get books for our classroom library and supplies for the children. Unfortunately, I am unable to spend anymore and my parents are struggling to provide basic necessities for the children. My children are in such need and this grant would go so far in helping them learn. I could use the listening center and talking books year after year. I will gladly do whatever is necessary to comply with any and all terms associated with this grant and I thank you sincerely for your kind consideration of my request.
