Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Please help my students develop a life long love for reading.
Approximately 85% of the children at our Southern California school are below poverty level, on free or reduced lunch, and are learning English as a second language.
Many of my students’ parents are single parents raising the family alone, juggling two jobs to make ends meet, with no time for themselves, much less for reading to their children.
Many of my students are one or more grade levels behind in reading. Despite this, all of them love, love, love to read, and also to be read to. They struggle with reading but they try so hard each day to improve. Our classroom has a great reading program complete with C.D.'s but no listening center.
My Project
The listening center will allow my students to sit back, relax and listen to stories. By listening to the stories they will become better and more fluent readers.
Research shows us that even if a child cannot read at the book level, listening to it read aloud can
• Build listening and comprehension skills through discussion during and after reading.
• Increase their vocabulary foundation by hearing words in context.
• Improve their memory and language skills as they hear a variety of writing styles and paraphrase their understanding.
By providing my students with a listening center, they will be able to develop a love for reading as well as strengthen their fluency and comprehension skills.
There is no better way to help a child develop a love for reading than by reading to them!
