My Students

Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC; where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, 6 of my 15 kindergarten students have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) addressing their various needs (ie., developmental delays, speech and language impairments, autism, and/or behavior challenges).

Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics; and would benefit tremendously from a Listening Center with accompanying books/cds being incorporated into their daily Literacy Centers' Rotation.

It should be noted, however, that all of my students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new; and have shown so much growth and potential for excellence since their very first day of school back in August, which seems so long ago!

My Project

My students participate daily in a planned rotation of literacy centers. The addition of a Listening Center will provide the perfect accommodation for my auditory learners. Listening to books read aloud while following along in a book will help these struggling readers move beyond the decoding and right into learning. In addition, the more they learn and incorporate into their knowledge-base, the better able they will be to access the general education curriculum.

Students having frequent access to a Listening Center will help them reduce working memory deficits; while increasing their word exposure, improved vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension.

My students daily participation in literacy centers that includes a Listening Center will assist them in the reduction of working memory deficits by boosting our students' ability to retain, recall, and understand the content being provided.

My Special Needs' students have various disabilities, often coming from different backgrounds or single head of households, and frequently have specific individual needs based on both academic and social emotional learning. These students, specifically, would benefit tremendously from a Listening Center (technology) in our kindergarten classroom. Your generous donation to our kindergarten classroom is most appreciated!
