My students need audio books for our listening center. Audio books help improve literacy through listening.

My Students
My students are eager to learn and grow in their ability to read and understand information through the written word. "It's time for Daily 5!" Yes! They love this time of each day that is devoted to growing literacy. If for some reason we have to miss it, they are all disappointed.
Our school is in a rural community, in South Carolina, where tradition is thick and families depend on one another.
I have students who come from every socioeconomic level - high to very low. I have students from many different races, religions, and academic levels. Their interests are just as diverse! My students are full of personality and are just beginning to discover that they can make a difference in their world. However, many of my students do not read fluently and we need are in need of resources to help them achieve a higher fluency rate.
My Project
Every day, we participate in Daily 5 where students rotate to one of 5 literacy centers where they work on building their literacy through reading independently, listening to reading, working on Mimio (a computerized reading program), working with words, and working on writing. Students look forward to this time every day. We are in need of more audio books in our listening center. Currently, there are only 3, and many students have already listened to those books. While using the materials I have requested in the listening center, students will track words from the actual books, while listening to the audio books. This will help students with word recognition and gives a good example of how fluent reading sounds.
Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and reading comprehension.
Since fluent readers don't have to concentrate on decoding the actual words, they can focus their attention on what the text actually means. They can make mental connections throughout the text and apply those connections to their own backgrounds and experiences. Simply, listening to fluency and matching that sound to actual words will make a difference in student's own abilities.
