Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Most of my students are coming to school for the first time when they show up for kindergarten. At the beginning of the year we focus all of our energy on learning and recognizing our names in print, following simple directions and making friends. As we move forward, we continue to build our skills in reading, writing and math.

Many of my students will come to depend on school as a safe place to go.

I want to establish a classroom where the students feel comfortable to try new things, work hard and succeed. We will build routines and be brave in our learning and exploring!

My Project

Throughout our day at school we work in several different settings - whole group or small group with the teacher, cooperative groups with peers or independently. We have wonderful digital programs to supplement direct instruction and the students need to wear headphones to work independently and stay focused on their individual tasks.

In kindergarten, beginning reading skills are a main focus.

Some of these skills include beginning sounds, rhyming words and sight words. These phonemic awareness kits will provide tactile experiences for the students to practice these skills. The alphabet tubs will help the students develop a strong sense of letter identification and sounds.
