Do you remember asking your teacher to read your favorite book over and over and over? That is a favorite pasttime in my classroom. My little ones love to hear their favorite stories. They eventually can retell me the stories in my tone and pace. It is amazing to how well they have listened and memorized! My children need the opportunity to hear other people read, directing their own choices. I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Irving School on Chicago's west side. There are very few self-contained special education classes that serve preschool and kindergarten-aged children in the Chicago area, therefore, my students are bussed from neighborhoods throughout the city. To qualify for services in my classroom, the students are either significantly developmentally delayed or diagnosed with a specific disability such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a genetic disorder. I currently service 14 children with chronological ages from 3-6 and developmental skills from 12 months through 5 years. Young children with special needs learn best through hands-on exploration of the world. They need to manipulate the world and see thier impact upon it. This is true when learning how to read. A listening center with books, cd's with readings of books, and a way to organize materials would be so wonderful in our classroom! The children would be able to select the books that they love, listen to them endlessly on headphones, and do it all independently!
