This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My second grade students attend an inner city school in Los Angeles. They are from various backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. Many of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) with roots in Latin America. The neighborhood is currently gentrifying, so we are developing a diverse population with many types of needs.
We are a STEM magnet that caters to unique and motivated students in Los Angeles.
They love to learn and constantly challenge me to meet their unique needs and ignite their passion for learning.
The school is 100 years old, and we have multiple generations of students who have attended the school. Although the neighborhood is changing, many of the families remain the same.
My Project
My students are fortunate to have a computerized reading program that caters to their individual needs. Unfortunately, the programs read to them, but they cannot hear or concentrate because of the normal noise levels in the classroom.
My students will use the headphones to carefully listen to stories and answer comprehension and vocabulary questions.
The headphones will allow students to develop their skills as readers, especially the struggling students. The program provides them with decoding and spelling, but it is vital that students hear individual sounds. The audio headphones will allow each child to hear individual sounds in each word.
