Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 1st graders in a bilingual Spanish-English K-8 public school. In our class, we work hard to become better readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists and citizens while strengthening our different languages and learning about our heritage.
My students are inquisitive, bright, funny and wiggly.
They love listening to stories, creating new art projects and solving interesting math puzzles. Each one of them brings a unique blend of backgrounds, learning styles and strengths that makes our class stronger and better for everyone.
My Project
Listening to a fluent model of reading will help all students improve their own reading, strengthen their comprehension and expand their knowledge. A listening center will help all students access engaging materials that might be a bit too hard for them to read independently. From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons will help support our science unit around life cycles, while Reaching for the Moon by Buzz Aldrin will enhance our biography unit.
Having a listening center in our first grade classroom will help foster a love for reading in all of my students, especially for the students who are still working on learning how to read independently.
