The use of headphones is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in reading. Using the headphones and desk dividers model, students may learn listening skills and focusing skills while reading. The dividers allow me to monitor what students are doing on their own, as well as provide an easy place for them to focus on the listening activities. What becomes a problem is that students get distracted without the headphones and dividers when completing the reading program. When something goes awry, students know that they must raise their hand for the teacher to help. Even though they are great about doing this, it is distracting for many of my students who have focusing issues and they miss important instruction form either myself or other students. By having earphones and dividers, students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!
